Breakfast Around the World: Scandinavia
Scandinavia refers to northern European countries of Denmark, Norway and Sweden (Wikipedia). Breakfast is considered an important meal time, which include hot cereals, porridges, and open face sandwiches. Crispbread is the base bread for the sandwich - can be rye or sourdough, which gives that crunchy texture. Paired with butter, cheese, or cucumber, apples, sliced egg, or bell pepper, the open faced sandwich is quite common. Where can you find a traditional Scandinavian breakfast in NYC? Interesting enough the Great Northern Food Hall in Grand Central Station highlights the Scandinavian meal.
I found "Grantoftegaards", typical crispbreads and sourdoughs - both small and big.
For breakfast, I bought a "Kanelsnurrer" or cinnamon swirl and an open face sandwich consisting of white cheese and raspberry jam. The cinnamon swirl was pretty sweet. However, the sandwich was a good balance of sweet jam and the savory flavor of the cheese. The bread is crispy on the outside but soft and freshly baked on the inside. Warm it up and you experience a feeling of comfort food on colder mornings.
